Symphony No. 3 in C minor ("Organ") is one of Camille Saint-Saëns' most important compositions. It is the last of his five symphonies. Saint-Saëns personally conducted the premiere on 19 May 1886 at the fifth concert of the Philharmonic Society in London. He himself judged the "Organ Symphony": "I gave everything I could give there. what I did then I have not done again." With over 1,200 titles from orchestral and choral literature, chamber music and music theatre, Edition Eulenburg is the largest score series in the world. Camille Saint-Saëns studierte bei Benoist, Halévy und Reber und wirkte von 1853-1877 an verschiedenen Kirchen in Paris als Organist. Ab dem Jahr 1877 widmete sich Saint-Saens ausschließlich der Komposition. 1871 gründete er u.a. mit C. Franck die Société Nationale de Musique. Auch wenn seine Erfolge zunächst in Frankreich größer waren als in Deutschland, gilt Saint-Saens neben Gounod als bedeutendster Vertreter der neoklassizistischen Richtung in Frankreich.
