Sacred places are sites separated from everyday life. They are associated with symbolical and ritual activity, serving the constitution both of communal and individual identity. Ancient Mediterranean sites are explored from archaeological, historical, theological perspectives. They demonstrate various ways of transformation, from their origination, their sometimes century-long existence, their demise and sometimes radically modified renovation. The contributions are related by the question of continuity and discontinuity of the histories of sacred sites and places.
